She's a retired Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Radford University where she taught from 1986 to 2005. A native of Rockingham County in Virginia's Allegheny Mountains, she has devoted her life to understanding rural America and Appalachia.

The daughter's doctor had told her that her right ovary would have to be removed because of a mass growing on the ovary.
