The Animal Dialogues
by Craig Childs
"This is a collection of my own encounters, staring at animals for as long as they would stay."
At the end of a scorching day in the Sonoran Desert, author Craig Childs and a companion hear a lone coyote howling into the sky. Childs pulls out his flute from his knapsack and plays high, furious notes back to the coyote. Looking through binoculars, his friend says that the coyote seems to be responding to the music. "It sat down," he tells Childs. "It's just sitting out there listening." In other parts of the book, the author records the "cloak and dagger affairs" of ravens and the dreamlike experience of being stalked by a jaguar. Childs makes it clear that any observer with enough humility and patience can witness raccoons or spotted owls communicating on their own turf and even send the occasional human signal in return.
